Redbud Writer’s Guild: Let's talk about Disability Awareness Month

Join Dorena Williamson as she talks with writer, Jennifer Ji-Hye Ko, in honor of Disability Awareness Month.

In this conversation, they discuss:

  • Disability Awareness Month, including Jennifer's personal journey and discovering disability

  • Historical context and the church's response to disability

  • The need for a theology of disability in the church

  • Practical steps for the church to become more inclusive

The Generational Sin of Partiality vs Friendship That Does Justice

In March 2020, Lifeway took a poll that found nearly every pastor (99%) and nearly every churchgoer (97%) says someone with a disability would feel welcomed and included at their church. However, in a previous poll journalist Shannon Dingle found of families living with disability, 86.5% said their church needs more education on disability. These polls show what people with disabilities already know — there is a huge gap between what pastors and churchgoers believe to be true and what families affected by disabilities experience. With a brief romp through church disability history, reading the scriptures in light of historical disability context as well as sharing her personal experience as a Christian with disabilities, Jennifer will invite you to think about the radical Christian life as it pertains to the demographic most unreached and most marginalized by the modern church.
